Through this series I am creating a visual commentary on the commodification and commercialization of sex seen in a puritanical, patriarchal and capitalist society. I photograph my sculptures on white backdrops with commercial lighting techniques to display them similarly to e-commerce webpages. Some sculptures are photographed in a stylized manner as if they were part of a marketing campaign.
Using the external — or male — condom, I want to emphasize the dominance of the cis-male narrative and power in sex-related topics(reproductive health and rights, sex education, sexual humor, body politics), as well as in the art and business industries. With only the use of the external condom, the absence of the internal — or female — condom is apparent and the idea of a gender binary and heteronormative culture is called to mind. I am removing the external condom from the functional form and present it in a new and queer form, yet it remains tied to the cis-male regardless the other subject matter with which it is displayed.
